Holmes was pleased to host the Professional Negligence & Liability Conference 2026 in association with The Professional Negligence Lawyers Association (PNLA), bringing together leading legal, insurance and business professionals from Ireland and the UK for a day of insightful discussion on the evolving landscape of professional liability.
The conference provided a valuable forum for examining the challenges and opportunities facing professionals across a range of sectors, with expert speakers addressing key legal developments, emerging risks and practical strategies for navigating an increasingly complex environment.
The day commenced with an opening address from Martin Hayden SC, who explored the growing intersection between artificial intelligence and legal privilege, highlighting the legal and ethical considerations arising from the increased use of AI tools within professional practice.
Delegates also heard from Jennifer Goode BL, who delivered an insightful presentation on the changing risks of defamation for professionals, examining recent developments under the Defamation Act 2009 and the practical implications for practitioners and organisations.
Further discussion focused on the scope of professional duties and liability, with Professor David McIlroy analysing recent case law developments, including the significant English and Welsh decision in Manchester Building Society v Grant Thornton, and its implications for professional negligence claims.
Throughout the conference, speakers examined a wide range of contemporary issues, including:
- Emerging developments in professional negligence and liability law;
- Jurisdictional and policy coverage issues in complex disputes;
- Alternative dispute resolution in professional negligence matters;
- Governance and boardroom disputes;
- Insolvency-related professional risks;
- Construction negligence claims and BC(A)R compliance; and
- The impact of artificial intelligence on professional responsibility, legal practice and insurance.
A particularly engaging panel discussion was led by Michael Murphy, Partner, and Kieran Wallace of Interpath Advisory, who explored the management and mitigation of professional risks within the insolvency sector, including liquidations, receiverships and examinations.
Delegates also benefited from a practical presentation by Niall Meagher on current trends in construction negligence claims and the challenges associated with regulatory compliance within the construction industry.
The conference concluded with a thought-provoking address from Ger Perdisatt of Acuity AI, who examined the continuing impact of artificial intelligence across professional sectors, considering both the opportunities presented by technological advancement and the importance of effective risk management.
A recurring theme throughout the day was that while technology, regulation and professional risks continue to evolve, the foundations of effective professional service remain unchanged. Sound judgement, specialist expertise and accountability continue to be central to maintaining client trust and managing professional risk.
Holmes was honoured to welcome so many distinguished speakers, clients, colleagues and industry professionals to this year's conference. The breadth of expertise and quality of discussion reaffirmed the importance of collaborative engagement in addressing the complex issues shaping the future of professional negligence and liability.
We extend our sincere thanks to all speakers, attendees and contributors whose participation made the event such a success. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and supporting clients as they navigate an increasingly dynamic professional and regulatory landscape.
