Melissa Regan, Solicitor, joined the firm in 2018 as a legal intern and qualified as a solicitor in 2022.
Melissa completed her traineeship with the firm, gaining experience in a wide range of areas to include commercial property, banking, construction, commercial/ corporate and insurance litigation. She now specialises in insurance litigation, primarily in the financial lines sector, together with commercial litigation and dispute resolution.
Melissa regularly advises insurance companies in the defence of various professional negligence claims, to include providing coverage advices, liability assessments, strategy advices with a view to bringing the matter to the best possible resolution together with assisting insurance companies in setting sufficient reserves for the file.
Melissa also works with both public and private bodies in dealing with highly contentious disputes, she works with clients to bring the matter to a successful resolution, whether through the court process or alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as mediation, arbitration etc. In addition, she has experience in dealing with cyber claims and data queries for clients.
Melissa has extensive experience in dealing with the Commercial Court in Ireland as well as the High Court and Circuit Court and also has experience in advising in cross-jurisdictional disputes.
Recent Work Highlights
- In conjunction with the rest of the financial lines team, Melissa acted on behalf of Arachas insurance brokers in the defence of the various Commercial Court Covid-19 business interruption claims initiated by the Press Up Group against Arachas as their brokers and various insurance companies. We were delighted to achieve a successful outcome for our client resulting in all claims of wrongdoing against Arachas being withdrawn.
- Advised an insurance company in respect of professional negligence proceedings which were issued against an insured barrister alleging negligent advices were provided resulting in issues in respect of the sale of a number of properties which formed part of a development. Holmes were able to compromise the matter for a small contribution without the need for lengthy and expensive court proceedings.
- Advised an insurance company in the defence of professional negligence proceedings issued against an engineer alleging defects in a multi-million euro residential property. We successfully resolved the matter at mediation by way of an all-in contribution from ourselves and the co-defendants.
- Regularly advises insurance companies in relation to professional negligence proceedings issued against various insured professionals to include architects, engineers, solicitors, barristers, accountants.
- Advising clients in relation to cyber claims and also in relation to data protection queries to include data breach complaints, data subject access requests and advices in relation to data agreements.
